The algorithm can't fire your riders any more. A human has to.
The Platform Work Directive (2024/2831) makes platforms tell workers how automated monitoring and decision systems work, bans processing data such as emotions or private conversations, requires human oversight, puts decisions to restrict, suspend or end an account in human hands, and gives workers a right to an explanation and a review.
Questions people ask
What does the Platform Work Directive require?
Platforms must inform workers about automated monitoring and decision-making systems, must not process certain personal data, must ensure human oversight of those systems, must have decisions to restrict, suspend or terminate an account taken by a human, and must give workers an explanation and a way to request a review.
When does it apply?
Member States must bring Directive (EU) 2024/2831 into national law by 2 December 2026.
Which data is banned?
Data on a person's emotional or psychological state, private conversations, data collected while the person is not working, data used to predict the exercise of fundamental rights such as union activity, and data to infer sensitive characteristics, among others.
How fast must a review be answered?
When a worker asks for a review of a decision, the platform must reply with a substantiated response without undue delay, and within two weeks of the request.
How do I prove a human made the decision?
Record each automated decision about a worker and the human review behind any restriction or termination, sealed at the time, so it can be shown to the worker, their representatives or a labour inspector.
