What is OpenTimestamps?
OpenTimestamps is an open, free standard for timestamping data in the Bitcoin blockchain. Many fingerprints are combined into a single Merkle root, the root is committed to a Bitcoin transaction, and each fingerprint gets a small proof file linking it to that block. Anyone can verify the proof against Bitcoin without trusting whoever made it.
How it works
- A fingerprint (SHA-256) of the data is submitted, never the data itself.
- Calendar servers aggregate fingerprints and commit the root to Bitcoin.
- Once the block is confirmed, the proof shows the data existed before that block's time.
- sebbi.pro's Forever Proof bundles the Merkle path and the OpenTimestamps proof in one file.
