What is EN 18286?

EN 18286:2026 is the first harmonised European standard under the EU AI Act. It sets out the quality management system that providers of high-risk AI need under Article 17. It was cited in the Official Journal on 14 October 2026 by Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/2274, and meeting it gives a presumption of conformity with Article 17(1) and the first sentence of Article 11(1).

How it works

  1. It covers the QMS itself, leadership, planning, support, the AI system life cycle, operations including post-market monitoring and incidents, and management review.
  2. Applying it is voluntary, but the legal obligations it covers are not.
  3. Check yourself against all 36 controls free in five minutes.
