What AI laws apply in the United States?
The US has no single federal AI law. AI is covered by existing federal laws on discrimination, consumer protection and sector rules, enforced by agencies such as the FTC, EEOC and CFPB, plus a growing set of state and city laws. Examples are New York City's Local Law 144 on bias audits for automated hiring tools, Colorado's AI Act on high-risk consequential decisions, and state rules on AI disclosures and deepfakes. The NIST AI Risk Management Framework is the widely used voluntary standard.
How it works
- List the states and cities you operate in and check their AI rules.
- For hiring tools used in New York City, arrange an annual independent bias audit and notify candidates.
- Use the NIST AI RMF to structure governance.
- Keep records that show non-discrimination and human review.
