Checks / AI power and energy check
EU AI Act Annex XI · Energy Efficiency Directive · SECR · ESOS · CSRD

AI runs on power. The law now wants the meter reading.

Providers of general-purpose AI models must document the model's energy use. EU data centres of 500 kW or more report their energy performance every year. UK companies report energy through SECR and ESOS. And any claim that your AI is 'green' must be proved. Check how ready your energy evidence is, then seal your figures in an Energy Record anyone can check.

EU AI Act Annex XI 1(2)(e)
known or estimated energy use of a GPAI model documented
For providers of general-purpose AI models: the known or estimated energy used to train the model.
EU AI Act Art.53
energy figure ready for the AI Office and downstream providers
The energy figure in the technical documentation, ready for the AI Office and downstream providers.
AI energy
energy use of AI workloads measured or estimated
Energy used by your AI workloads, measured from your infrastructure or estimated from compute.
AI energy
energy per AI request or decision tracked
Energy per AI request or decision, so efficiency can be tracked. Seal it with an Energy Record.
EED 2023/1791 Art.12
data centres of 500 kW or more report energy performance
If you run a data centre of 500 kW IT power or more in the EU, the annual energy performance report filed.
Reg (EU) 2024/1364
PUE, WUE and renewable share recorded
PUE, water use, renewable share and waste heat reuse recorded for your data centres.
Hosting
provider's energy use and renewable share known
Your cloud or hosting provider's energy use and renewable share for the services you use.
SECR
AI and data centre energy included in the UK energy and carbon report
AI and data centre energy included in your Streamlined Energy and Carbon Report, if you are a large or quoted UK company.
ESOS
AI and IT energy included in the energy audit
AI and IT energy included in your ESOS energy audit, if you are a large UK undertaking.
CSRD ESRS E1
energy consumption and mix reported where in scope
Energy consumption and mix reported under ESRS E1, if you are still in CSRD scope.
Efficiency
model choice weighs energy use against the task
Model choice that weighs energy use against the task, such as a smaller model for simple work.
Claims
energy and carbon claims about AI backed by sealed evidence
Any 'green AI' or carbon claim backed by sealed evidence. Untested green claims are banned in the EU.
Review
last AI energy review date
The date of your last review of AI energy use.

Questions people ask

Does the EU AI Act require energy reporting?

Providers of general-purpose AI models must include the known or estimated energy consumption of the model in their technical documentation (Article 53 and Annex XI). If the figure is unknown, it can be estimated from the computational resources used.

Which data centres must report energy?

Under Article 12 of the Energy Efficiency Directive (EU) 2023/1791, operators of data centres in the EU with an installed IT power demand of at least 500 kW report energy performance each year. Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/1364 sets the indicators, including PUE, water use, renewable energy share and waste heat reuse.

What do UK companies have to report?

Quoted companies and large unquoted companies and LLPs report UK energy use and emissions in their annual report under Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR). Large undertakings carry out ESOS energy audits every four years. AI and data centre energy count towards both.

Can I say my AI is green or carbon neutral?

Only with evidence. In the EU, generic environmental claims without recognised excellent performance, and neutral claims based on offsetting, have been banned since 27 September 2026. In the UK, the CMA's Green Claims Code applies.

How do I measure AI energy use?

From your infrastructure's metering where you run it, from your cloud provider's reports, or estimated from compute (hardware power multiplied by hours, times the data centre's PUE). Record the method alongside the figure.

What is an Energy Record?

A sealed statement of energy used over a period, with the per-request figure and the evidence files fingerprinted. It is timestamped in Bitcoin, so it backs reports and green claims and cannot be changed afterwards.
