Invoice fraud costs the UK £450m a year: criminals intercept a real invoice and switch the bank details. Since October 2024, UK banks must reimburse victims up to £85,000 — unless the payer failed to take reasonable care. The Payment Notary is how both sides prove care: the business seals its true details once, every invoice carries a short code, and every check you run is itself sealed into the chain — a timestamped Verification Receipt proving you checked before you paid. If the details don't match the sealed original — you don't pay, and your receipt proves you caught it.

If the check fails, do not send the payment. Phone the business on a number you already know — not one from the invoice — and confirm the details by voice. Report suspected fraud to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
